Answer.

Compassion is a virtue and also a foremost value for public servants. Compassion encourages one to be sensitive to, experience, and help the suffering of others. The virtue of compassion in public servants encourages them to work for alleviating that suffering, especially of the weaker sections.

The basic requirements of compassion are:

  • kindness;
  • empathy and sensitivity
  • justness;
  • dedication and selflessness
  • wisdom

kindness; The true spirit of compassion is generosity. We should think about the needs and wants of other people and be ready to help them. Compassion encourages being kind to all and caring for those in need.

empathy and sensitivity; The root of compassion is sensitivity. We should also feel the pain and problems of others. Compassion requires empathy to understand and alleviate the suffering of others.

justness; The real purpose of compassion is to give justice to all. Compassion requires that we be just to those who suffer.

dedication and selflessness; The greatest emotion of compassion is dedication. We must be willing to commit time, resources, and dedication to other people. Compassion requires selflessness which involves putting the needs of others above your own.

Understanding: Along with compassion, understanding is also necessary. We should understand the sufferings of others and should be able to give them the right advice.

Compassion is a very useful value for civil servants to have in order to meet the needs of the weaker sections of society. Weaker sections like women, the poor, children, and minorities form a major part of the population in India who are vulnerable to discrimination, exploitation, and marginalization. Compassion towards the weaker section in civil services helps civil servants to-
