Question.

Discuss the root causes of gender-related negative attitudes.  Why is it so rigid?

(UPPSC GS paper 4 2021)

Answer.

Due to gender-related negative attitudes in society, gender-related discrimination, misunderstanding, violence, polygamy, etc. are present. Considering women as weak, considering women as inferior to men, and considering women as sexual objects; is the result of the gender-related negative attitude in society.

Following are some of the root causes of gender-related negative attitudes:

  • Patriarchy society
  • Stereotype
  • lack of education
  • Cultural and religious belief
  • Film industry and media

Patriarchy: The patriarchal system in society allows men to have power and rights in society, as a result, it leads to the superiority of men and makes women subordinate to men. This negative attitude [patriarch] leads to polygamy, misunderstanding, discrimination, and violence against women in society.

Stereotypes [stereotyping]: stereotypes mean to give more recognition to old traditions and beliefs about individuals without knowing the present fact, such as women should only do housework, women cannot run trains, etc. are an example of stereotypes. Gender stereotypes are very harmful to society because it limits women's ability in society and prevents them from moving forward.

Lack of modern education: When people are not educated, they are negative towards women because their value is largely controlled by their socio-religious system.

Cultural and religious beliefs: There are many beliefs in cultural and religious beliefs in which women are not considered suitable for some work and it is also believed that women should work under men. These types of gender-negative attitudes often cause violence and non-sanctions against women when they want to break such beliefs.

Role of film industry and media: Many movies and TV shows depict women as sexual objects and weak, which leads to the formation of negative gender-based stereotyping that often creates gender-related negative attitudes in society.

Negative sexual objectives are so rigid because their deep roots are formed from culture, society, education system, and historical context. Due to cultural and religious beliefs, gender stereotypes and prejudices in society have formed a strong base of gender-related negative attitudes.

The gender-related negative attitudes are a hindrance to the overall development of our society which can be overcome by good education and awareness.
