Answer.

Social forestry is the management and development of forests on barren land and unused land to help ecology and rural economy. 

The term social forestry was first used in India in 1976 by the National Commission for Agriculture.

As far as social forestry of Uttar Pradesh is concerned, "the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Department" of Uttar Pradesh is responsible for the management of social forestry in the state.


Initiatives and Strategies by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to promote social forestry:

  • "Trees Outside Forests in India" program
  • Vision 2023
  • Social Forestry in Urban Areas
  • Joint Forest Management (JFM) Program


"Trees Outside Forests in India" Program:

The “Trees Outside Forests in India” program in Uttar Pradesh was launched in 2023 jointly by the " Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Department " of Uttar Pradesh and the "U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)".


Afforestation Vision 2023:

The government aims to increase the forest and tree cover to 15 percent of the total area of Uttar Pradesh from about 9 percent by 2030.


Social Forestry in Urban areas:

The state government is promoting plantation work on urban land. Urban forests and green belts are part of this initiative. It is part of climate change mitigation efforts.


Joint Forest Management (JFM) Program:

Uttar Pradesh has implemented a Joint Forest Management Program, involving local communities in the management and protection of forest resources.

A large-scale tree plantation program is being conducted in the state, Uttar Pradesh created a Guinness world record by planting 1 crore trees on a single day ( 31 July 2017) in the state.



These initiatives and strategies reflect the government's commitment to promoting social forestry in Uttar Pradesh, fostering community participation, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic development in the state.
