Maps [ Summary Notes] | The Earth Our Habitat | Class 6 Geography MCQ NCERT

What is the difference between globe and map?

  • The globe represents a true miniature of the Earth and is in 3D (three-dimension) form. Globe is useful when we want to study the whole earth.
  • The map is in 2D form and it is useful when we want to study only some parts of the earth like a particular country, state, ocean, land, etc.

Types of Maps

There are three types of maps based on the utility:
  • Physical Maps
  • Political Maps
  • Thematic Maps

What is a physical map?
  • In physical maps, we depict the natural features of the earth like mountains, plateaus, plains, rivers, oceans, relief, etc.

What are political maps?
  • In political maps, we depict the area and boundaries of cities, towns, villages, countries, and states, etc.

What are thematic maps?
  • Such maps in which we show specific information such as road distribution, rainfall distribution, distribution of forests, distribution of industries, etc., are called thematic maps.

How many components does a map have?
The map has three components:
  • Distance
  • Direction
  • symbol

Distance:
  • In a map, we draw a world or part of it. While drawing, the actual distance between the places is represented by minimizing them through scales, so that the actual distance between the places is also visible on the map.
  • For example, if we are assuming the scale that we will show the actual distance of 1000 km in 1 cm on paper. While making a map, if the distance of the continents is 10000 km, then on paper we will show it as 10 cm and if the distance between two places is 2000 km then we will show it as 2 cm.
  • Distance is an important component of the map.

Direction:
  • Direction is the second component of Map. There are four cardinal Points that is north, south, east, and west.
  • If may has mentioned any one direction then we can easily find the other direction. In general, the "N" letter indicates the north direction.

Symbol:
  • The symbol is the third component of Maps.
  • Symbols give a lot of information in limited space.
  • Symbols are used by letters, shadows, colors, pictures, lines, etc.

What are the conventional symbols in maps?
  • Maps have a universal language that everyone can understand when we use internationally recognized symbols. Internationally recognized symbols are called conventional symbols.
For example,
  • The blue color is used to indicate water bodies.
  • Green is used to indicate a plant or vegetation.

What is a sketch?
  • A drawing that is not based on the scale but based on memory and local observations, such a drawing is called a sketch.
