Biogeography UPSC | Introduction | Physical Geography

What is biogeography:

In biogeography, we study the things that are in between human geography[ which emphasized the study of the lithosphere( landforms, relief, physiography) and atmospheric and weather phenomenon)] and human geography[ which emphasized the study of human activities such as demographic, economic, and social aspects.]

So we can say;
  • Biogeography is the branch of geography that deals with biotic ( flora, fauna, and microorganism ) things.
  • Microorganism also thrives in the soil, hence the soil part is also being studied in biogeography.
  • we study the geographical distribution of plants and animals through a geological timescale.

The biosphere has two major parts:

  • Soil
  • Biotic or flora and fauna

Under the biogeography syllabus in UPSC, we will study the following topics:

  • The genesis of soils; Classification and distribution of soils; Soil profile; Soil erosion, Degradation, and conservation;
  • Factors influencing world distribution of plants and animals;
  •  Problems of deforestation and conservation measures; Social forestry; agro-forestry;
  • Wildlife;
