1.  Answer the following questions briefly.

(a) Which winds bring rainfall in India? Why is it so important?

Answer:

  • Moisture-laden winds [ also called monsoon winds] blowing from the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal toward the lands bring rainfall in India.
Importance:
  • It is important because 90 % of the yearly requirement of overall water is fulfilled by these monsoon winds.
  • Monsson winds provide water not only for Agriculture and Economic activities but also for natural vegetation and wildlife.
  • Good monsoon means good rain in India means good agriculture and proporous India.

(b) Name the different seasons in India.

Answer:

The following are the seasons of India.

  • Summer[ March to May]
  • Rainy or South West Monsson Season[ June to September]
  • Autumn or North-East Monsoon season or retreating monsoon season[ October to November]
  • Winter season [ December to February]

(c) What is natural vegetation?

Answer:

  • The vegetation or plant which grow naturally without the help of human is called natural vegetation. For example, Different types of forests.

(d) Name the different types of vegetation found in India.

Answer:

The following are different types of vegetation in India:

  • Tropical Evergreen Forests
  • Tropical Deciduous forests
  • Thorny Bushes
  • Mountain Forest
  • Mangrove Forests


(e) What is the difference between evergreen forest and deciduous forest?

Answer:

The following are the difference between evergreen forest and deciduous forest:

  • The evergreen forest grows in the heavy rainfall areas[ 200-400 cm in a year] wheres deciduous forest grow in the medium rainfall areas[100-200 cm in a year]
  • The evergreen forest looks evergreen all the year as they do not shed leaves all at once where the deciduous forest does not look evergreen all the year as they shed their leave in the autumn season.
  • The evergreen forest has a dense canopy and grown in layers whereas the deciduous forest is not as dense as the evergreen forest.
  • The very rich diversity of flora and fauna are found in the evergreen forest unlike the deciduous forest
  • Examples of evergreen trees are Mahogany, Rosewood, and ebony.
  • Example of deciduous trees are Neem, Peepla, Sal, Teak, Sheesham


(f) Why is tropical rainforest also called evergreen forest?

Answer:

  • Because tropical rainforest does not shed their leave all at a time and they shed their leaves different times of a year. They look green all the year that is why they are called an evergreen forests.
