Vedic Period of Uttar Pradesh:

The timeline of the Vedic period is bout 1500 BCE to 600 BCE. 

There is not much historical record found of the Vedic Period in Uttar Pradesh.

Mahajanpada Period of Uttar Pradesh:

Mahajanapadas time period is about 600 BCE to 343 BCE.

The name of 16 Mahajanpadas is mentioned in Anguttura Nikhaya (Suttapitaka).

Eight out of sixteen ( 16) Mahajanpada were located in Uttar Pradesh:

  • Kuru
  • Panchala
  • Shursena
  • Vats
  • Kaushal
  • Malla
  • Kashi
  • Chedi


Kuru Mahajanapada :

Kuru Mahajanapada was in present-day Meerut ( Uttar Pradesh), Haryana, and Delhi.

The capital of Kuru Mahajanapada was Indraprastha/Hastinapur, presently in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

 The story of Mahabharat around the Kuru dynasty of Hastinapur.

Panchala Mahajanapada:

Panchala Mahajanapada was in present-day Bareilly, Budaun, and Farrukhabad districts of Uttar Pradesh. It was mainly located in Ganga-Yamuna Doab.

The capital of Panchala Mahajanapada was Ahichhatra /Kampilya, presently in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

Panchala was the birthplace of Draupadi ( wife of Pandava), as per Mahabharata Story.

Surasena Mahajanapada:

Surasena Mahajanapada was present-day located in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh.

The capital of Surasena Mahajanapada is located in Mathura ( Uttar Pradesh).

Vatsa Mahajanapada:

Vatsa Mahajanapada is also known as Vamsa. It was located in present-day Prayagaraj and Mirzapur

The Capital of Vatsa Mahajanapada was Kausambi. 

Kaushal ( Kosala) Mahajanapada:

Kaushal Mahajanapada was in present-day  Shravasti, Ayodhya, Gonda, and Bahraich districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The capital of Kaushal Mahajanapada was located in Shravasti/Ayodhya/Saket.

The story of Ramayan revolves around the Ikshwaku dynasty of Kosala.

The Ashram of Valmiki, the composer of Ramayan, was in Brahmvarta, Bithoor in the Kanpur District.

The Ashram of Valmiki, the composer of Ramayan is located in Bithoor in Kanpur district.

Gautama Buddha spent his 24 years of teaching in Kosala Mahajanapada. 

Malla Mahajanapada:

Mahajanapada was in present-day in Deoria, Basti, Gorakhpur,  and Siddhartha Nagar of Uttar Pradesh

Capital of Malla Mahajanapada was Kushinagar /Pava.

Gautam Buddha attained Nirvana ( Death) at Kushinagar and Mahavir Swami attained Nirvana ( death) in Pawanagar ( Pawapuri). Both are located to Malla Mahajanapada.

Kashi Mahajanapada:

Kashi Mahajanapada was present in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

The capital of Kashi Mahajanapada was Varanasi.

Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, which was located in Kashi Mahajanapada.

Chedi Mahajanapada:

Chedi Mahajanapada was presently in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The capital of Chedi Mahajanapada was Shuktimati ( Sothivati).
